Footsteps…

Childhood has a strange way of preserving feelings long after it erases the details. The reason fades, faces blur. Yet, a hallway, a shadow, and a particular sound of footsteps can remain sharp for decades. Human memory apparently is run by an archivist who throws away the paperwork and keeps the ghosts.

As a child, I shudder still when I recall the endlessly stretching hallway where we lived, a tunnel of dim light and held breath. I thought I was small enough to disappear behind a half-open door, pressed against the wall as footsteps echoed closer. Each creak of the floorboards felt like a warning and I watched his shadow arrive before he did. The apartment seemed to hold its breath with me. I don’t remember why I was hiding anymore, only the feeling of the cold knot in my stomach, the silence between heartbeats and the certainty that being found would change something forever.

From the Writer’s Workshop: Talk about a time you hid from someone.

When nature screams…

The looming darkness of the sky intensifies as the rumble of once distant thunder draws closer. Suddenly, the sharp crack of lightning causes a mixture of anxiety, fright, or, for some, stirs up delightful affection.

When nature screams, unleashing dramatic displays of power which some often enjoy as wind whips through trees, rain falls in sheets, and the ground seems to hum an ominous but magical tune. Storms unleash such dramatic displays of power that many relish, along with the feeling of nature’s untamed energy. A primal dance and a symphony of light and sound.

Possibly, it’s the contrast with everyday calm, or the way a storm forces us to pause for introspection with the powerful feelings it brings. Whatever the reason, many find themselves drawn to a powerful thunderstorm’s destructive beauty and undeniable presence.

A storm’s arrival is announced with each rumble of thunder, much like a distant drum roll which grows louder with each minute that passes. Then, the brilliant flash of lightning angrily tears through the darkened sky, reminding of the immense electrical currents at play. And there’s the rain itself, from a gentle, soothing, patter to a driving deluge, each adding its cadence to the storm’s rhythm. Mother Nature creates a ferocious and frightening symphony.

As the thunder rolls, it is a power beyond our control, a chance to witness something magnificent and feel a connection to the natural world, a feeling both frightening and exhilarating.

A choice…

We often struggle to share a story and, frankly, if that fear isn’t in place, we may well be in the minority.

Let’s face it, as hard as we try, we just cannot be anyone else, doing so defeats the purpose of us being who we are and of sharing all that makes us unique. Being someone else in order to fit into any accepted norm in the eyes and minds of others impacts our ability to walk our own path and stand out from the crowd. The underlying goal is always focused on avoiding rejection and surviving.

To achieve a fulfilling life, we all damn well need to walk our own path, stand out, often keeping a good distance from the crowd, while allowing our unique strengths to shine. At times, we all need to step back and realize that many people do want to connect with you, hear your opinions or consider your ideas even if there is some underlying disagreement and that, in itself, can be healthy as we set any fear aside and move forward. It helps to create a common ground of understanding, especially in present times when this can be considered a gift given the constant political diatribes being hurled at everyone, in every direction.

Then again, that damn fear can turn around and we feel that it will never leave, in itself, not the problem but how we relate to that fear definitely is. We can either give into our fears and doubts and end up living with walls which continue to close in on us or we realize that we gave too much importance to these feelings.

Take steps to move beyond the habit of taking things so seriously and push aside that “what if” mindset. Look through the illusion that you have created for yourself, get inspired, and ignore any fearful thoughts about what people will think. Thoughts do not hold power and can’t command our attention; if you watch and let them pass, they float away.

Tell that story.
