Stay home, dammit!!

Let’s face it, there is little to laugh about of late.  Fortunately, my having an extremely sarcastic personality (shocker, I know) allows for me to stand back, now and then, snickering over some of the idiocy that presents itself during this virus pandemic.

Hey, one must laugh wherever and whenever one can!

My particular, non-essential, employment came to a halt at 8 p.m. on March 21st.  I’ve ranted about the aftermath in other posts, given the foundation of my industry and its dedication to beauty.  Maintaining an acceptable self-image, especially where one’s crowning glory is concerned, is more important to most salon clients than changing the oil on their car.  At present, my stylist-friends share that their clients are mostly handling this situation well and many salons, for a nominal fee, are providing their actively-working clients with their formulated hair-color mixtures for self-application at home.  For them, I can well understand not letting those gnarly roots show while they are out in the workplace, still able to bring home a paycheck.

Now, for those currently unemployed, those retired and hunkered-down at home (where you should be)…who cares?  Weekly clients…it’s damn time you learned how to shampoo your own head, at least for the sake of cleanliness!  Where are you going that you just can’t plop a scarf, or a hat, on your head if you do venture out?  People are walking around wearing masks and gloves, most looking like they just stepped out, ready to rob a bank.  You, putting a covering over a 3″ wide strip of roots, or hair that hasn’t been teased high enough to touch the roof of your car,  won’t get anyone’s attention!  Trust me!

All of this brings me to someone (who shall remain nameless) who has demanded, insisted and, along with much pissing and moaning, refuses to acknowledge the dire situation involving the rampage of COVID-19!  This client (and, trust me, there are millions more like them) just cannot understand why any legalities, or safety regulations, should impact their individual lives.   Their sob-stories…“Just lock the salon door and no one will know.”, “If you get caught by the state inspector, just say I’m your family!”, “Well, I just HAVE to get my hair done and that’s IT!”.

I won’t share their name but…here’s their photo.  Feel free to distribute it from wherever you are. Just call it my bit to do some community service for the salon industry.

You’re welcome.

workshop-button-1From Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop…Share something that made you laugh this week.

I’ll admit to not laughing about much.  Some of the endless virus meme’s that everyone shares bring a smile, others bring a pause, a reminder, to keep prayers going for everyone.  I’ll also admit to being scared, for my family and friends and for humanity.  That being said, beyond this, I cannot laugh at the selfishness of others when so many humans are scared and suffering with this pandemic.

Hello…it’s me!

If there is anything favorable which has emerged with this COVID-19 nightmare, it’s bringing people together but at the required safe-distance.  Behind that is…time… and plenty of it as most people are hunkered-down in some element of self-imposed quarantine.  Suddenly, we have the almost unwanted luxury of little or nothing to do and plenty of time to do it in…perfect for the procrastinators of the world.  Like me.

Let’s face it, the daily chores aren’t going anywhere and, in a moment fueled by a sudden burst of energy, laced with a sprinkling of focus, we’ll all dive into that pile of “something” we’ve been putting off.  But first, we watch the news for virus updates.  Then, onto Netflix before moving onto social media, just to check up on what everyone else is doing and swipe a damn funny Meme now and then… to share on Instagram.  We (me/I) troll Facebook walls to see how friends are coping and share a kind word when needed or…run like hell when someone is spewing things political from their home cave-dwelling.  Sorry, boys and girls, this is a time for everyone to pull together and beating up our national and local governments over this pandemic is almost self-defeating.   We know where any and all blame lies for the spread of this virus, move past it, get over it, and start being pro-active in flattening the damn curve and bringing the spread to an effing halt!!

Okay.  All of this being said, over and over and over…one nice thing, a positive, at present.  At least for me.  Having the time (yes that time-thing again) to contact friends you don’t normally speak with.  Interaction with most usually involves back and forth texting or other forms of electronic engagement, but…picking up the phone and enjoying a long conversation with a friend from school, or anywhere, can be a treat.  More so than family.  Family k n o w s where you are and just assumes that, if and when they call, you will answer.  They know your routine, you know theirs, and in many ways, there’s little to “chat” about.  Is it boredom with this entire situation…or indifference?  Certainly, there is great underlying anger with having to cope with a situation which has impacted everyone’s lives so greatly.  Much like what we all experienced after 9/11/01.  But, if that unspeakable tragedy taught us one thing…it was to keep our families closer than ever before.  Now especially.

Until we can safely hug them again.

What to do, what to do….

Let’s face it, most of us enjoy having some free time to accomplish the many things we keep putting on the back burner of our lives.  Now…that time is here, in the form of a quarantine, staring back at us like a teacher, demanding our homework!

I got nuthin’.

Oh, sure, the ideas are rolling through my head like a trucker on the highway but my mind seems to coast into every available rest stop.  The distractions are many at present.  The news, social media, phone calls, texts…all reasons excuses for not jumping into, and accomplishing, some needed project while I’m incarcerated, here at home.

The problem is…the time-frame in front of us with regard to staying-at-home, self-quarantining, and that provides opportunity to just push things off until tomorrow.  Or the week-end.  Even next week.

Normally, being at work and involved with activities at our local sportsman’s club, I maintain a very active daily/weekly pattern and usually have little difficulty in balancing tasks at hand.  I miss that.  It’s only been a few days of coping with this relative nothingness and attempts to pretend that I’m on vacation or stuck at home from some weather-related emergency are useless mind-games.  Stir-crazy, cabin fever…you name it, I’ve got it, most of us have it or…will be getting it but…we will get through it!

My Daily Schedule:

4 – 4:10 a.m.  I awaken

4:11 a.m.  Coffee

4:13 a.m.     Watch the news  (periodic trips to the bathroom)

7:10 a.m.     The Husband awakens

7:11 a.m.    I check my text messages, check email, check social media, make list of things I probably won’t get done.

7:30 a.m.   The Husband checks his messages, email, has breakfast, watches the news and asks “What are you doing today?”  (is he kidding me?)

9:10 a.m.     I make The Husband’s lunch and he leaves for work.

9:12 a.m.   The Husband comes back inside.  Forgot his glasses, his phone, his notebook, his lunch, his keys.

9:15 a.m.    He leaves.  Again.  This time I watch him drive down our road and see no more rapid U-turns back to our house.  (he calls from the car to tell me something he forgot but forgets what it was)

10:00 a.m.:   From this time, through the balance of the day, things won’t change much.  Not at this point, anyway.

My schedule will be more of the above with the exception of a few household chores, making dinner and more excuses.  Sure, there will be an occasional trip to the market where most shoppers are keeping safe distances and some are dressed in garb looking like deep sea divers.  For me, this being home bound is in its infancy stage and the novelty involved will wear-off in a few days.  My real focus will turn to catching-up on personal and business paperwork, setting up a replacement PC for where I temporarily don’t work, doing some household purging and, of course, spending more of my forced free-time…writing.

What are you doing today?
